Philip von Gersdorff Sørensen has taken an unusual path into the semiconductor industry. As he puts it himself: “The truth is that up until the point where I was hired at Topsil, I had pursued several different academic paths and shifted directions multiple times across various university degrees.”
Among other things, he studied for a bachelor’s in literature and semiotics: “As far away from silicon as you can get,” he adds with a smile. But in 2010, a newspaper ad led him to Topsil.
What started as a search for a steady job quickly became something more. He was drawn in by the technical work and the work environment at Topsil: “I felt so good just being there.”
Philip began as an operator in crystal processing and measuring, and later moved on to handling both processes, taking on responsibility for crystal processing, measurement, and seed crystal preparation. In 2021, he got the chance to learn from an experienced colleague and transitioned into a new role as Field Application Engineer (FAE) – becoming the department’s communications specialist. He now combines his technical knowledge with skills in communication, consulting, and guidance – both internally and externally. His role emerged in step with the company’s growing need for technical communication and dialogue with customers.
Philip has now been with Topsil for 14 years and values the company’s culture, which he describes as something unique and meaningful: “At Topsil, there has always been an informal, fun, and supportive culture between colleagues, regardless of position – something I haven’t experienced at other workplaces.”
It is exactly this good atmosphere and genuine professional interest that make Topsil so special for him: “The semiconductor industry is simply deeply fascinating, I think – but what really makes a difference is the ‘vibe’ at Topsil, which I believe is a rare quality worth preserving, even as we grow as a company.”
Steffen Voss Johansen has been a dedicated part of Topsil since 2018. With a background as an industrial technician and additional educations in LEAN, TPM, Six Sigma, and leadership, he has built strong competencies – both technically and in management.
For a period, Steffen lived abroad, but when production was moved back to Denmark, he returned. Shortly after, he became team leader in Backend Production, and by 2020, he was promoted to Production Manager for Backend. Today, he is responsible for team leaders, engineers, operators, and logistics.
His path to Topsil was paved by a friend who already worked here and spoke highly of the company. That quickly proved true: “I was inspired by a friend who worked in one of the technician teams at Topsil. He spoke highly of the working environment with a flat organizational structure and trust in the individual.”
From day one, Steffen felt valued and taken seriously. He’s had the freedom to grow and develop, even when things didn’t go as planned: “I’ve always felt that there was trust in me to succeed. Even when I failed, I experienced support and was given the chance to try again – that meant a lot.”
For Steffen, Topsil is a workplace that combines respect, professional development, and personal growth. According to him, it is exactly this openness and support that make Topsil a fantastic place to be.
Ralf Hansen is an experienced and dedicated employee who has been part of Topsil for 18 years. With a background as a retail butcher and a desire to explore something new, he joined Topsil in 2006 in a temporary position. After just three months, he was offered a permanent role – quickly drawn to both the tasks and the team.
“I actually had no idea what I was getting into – but I immediately connected with the job and my colleagues.”
From his first position in poly cleaning, Ralf has taken several major steps in his career. In 2018, he became Process Owner for the crystal room, seed crystals, and poly cleaning. In 2024, he took on a leadership role as Team Leader for the weekend shift in Backend. This journey has not only strengthened his professional skills but also deepened his passion for his work at Topsil.
Ralf has followed Topsil’s technological advancements with great interest – particularly within automation in crystal handling, a field that has seen rapid progress:
“To follow the journey from back when we couldn’t even dream of running crystals automatically – to now, where the crystals practically run themselves thanks to automation and all the skilled operators – that is incredible.”
For Ralf, the freedom in his job, the collaboration with colleagues, and the many opportunities for development are key reasons why Topsil remains a special place to work.
Topsil has brought more than just professional experiences into his life – it’s also where he met his current partner. His engagement and loyalty over the years reflect the strong connection he has to the company and its people.
Since joining Topsil in May 2007, Monika Marinovic has distinguished herself as an engaged and ambitious employee who has always been open to new roles and challenges. Originally from Serbia, she came to Denmark in search of a job that offered more variety and development opportunities. Topsil became her next step, and she was quickly hired as a production operator in FZ, where she immediately found the work exciting and educational.
After ten years in production, continuously growing with her tasks, Monika was offered a role as coordinator and shortly after promoted to team leader in FZ. In this position, she developed her leadership skills and gained an even deeper understanding of production processes and team dynamics. This became a stepping stone to her next career move within Topsil’s development department, where she now works as a process specialist. In this role, she contributes to the company’s innovation efforts, combining her hands-on production experience with her analytical and process-oriented understanding.
For Monika, Topsil’s culture makes a significant difference in her daily work—a culture where everyone is seen and heard and where there are always opportunities to grow with new tasks. She emphasizes that Topsil recognizes and supports the potential of its employees, which gives her a sense of appreciation and motivation: “You feel seen and heard, and they recognize the potential in developing their employees.” Monika thrives in an environment where her professional and personal skills are continuously developed, and where she experiences being an integral part of the company’s progress and success every day—something she has truly found at Topsil.
Leif has been a central part of Topsil for 39 years – ever since he applied for a job he saw in a newspaper ad, where the company was looking for an electronics engineer to help develop measurement equipment.
With a background in low-voltage engineering from Aarhus Teknikum, he quickly became a key figure in developing both measurement instruments and production equipment – some of which are still in use today.
Over the years, Leif has held several important roles. In 1992, he became Head of Development, and later chose to further strengthen his profile by completing an Executive MBA in 2011. Today, he works closely with Topsil’s international partners, ensuring that the company’s technical expertise is represented globally.
Leif emphasizes Topsil’s strong culture of developing its people: “You can’t predict the future. For example, I once helped a colleague pursue a PhD – today, he’s in senior management.”
He sees Topsil as a workplace defined by long-term relationships and strong knowledge sharing: “Topsil is not a company with high turnover – when people come here, they stay. It’s a knowledge-based company. If people leave, it has real impact – everyone plays an important role.”
According to Leif, it’s this combination of technology and people that makes Topsil unique: “Here, technological and human development go hand in hand – and that’s exactly what makes Topsil a special workplace with room to grow.”
